“They say it’s your Birthday”

Hi, All  It’s been a while. I had a bit of writer’s block. I’m trying to get through by writing now.

I have been working some brioche lately. The brown one is “Alex” Nancy Marchant, the other is Brioche Memories by Valerie Ng. These have been in my WIP pile forever. Don’t worry there’s plenty more where these came from. I spin and dye during the day & work on WIP’s at night.

 

I have been doing a lot of spinning and dyeing. mixing fibers together looking for those perfect mixes.  The Red is just a little tease of what’s coming out soon. And don’t tell my boss, but I dyed a skein for myself too!

I still haven’t seen any comments on this site. People comment on my Facebook page or in our group. But never here. If there is a problem with the software could someone let me know? So I can fix it.

Oh yeah, did I tell you, we have a Homespun Dreams Group on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/757667784688069/   It’s kind of a fluffy stuff group, but we include all crafters/ makers to join. We do not discuss business Unless the group decides otherwise. Most of us are shop owners. But we are just forming and are always inviting people to join. You don’t have to have a shop, you don’t have to love yarn, It’s just a place for people to show things they are working on. Ask questions, answer questions. give advice.

Today is my birthday, it’s weird when your older (senior citizen) Birthdays can be a little depressing. I usually get started the day before, and it goes till the day after. I can’t explain it, my brain has no words. All I can call it is birthday blues. Do any of you get it? Or is it just me?

All in all, we are gearing up for Halloween. I have a couple of skeins that are kinda Halloween.

But I’m working on something that will be released as a group very soon. Hope everyone is well. And always remember:

Time

I seem to lose track all the Time

I have been at home nursing my knee. Time healing takes it’s toll. You get bored, all the time. There’s that word again. Sometimes I think I spend half my life waiting for Insurance Co. to make up their minds!

Well I have been nursing my knee for quite awhile, and still no answers. I got tired of waiting and started walking. I don’t know if it will help or not. At least, it makes me stronger.

Just finished mixing 3 batches of fiber. going to be dyeing this weekend. Then I get to start spinning! YAY!

I don’t think I realized before how hard it is to make yarn and still find time for your projects. Picking up the house, cooking ,shopping , MD appts. , Finding an apt in another State, all without a car! I sometimes wish for more hours in a day.(Time)

I think we all go through things like this everyday all over the world. Why are we doing this to ourselves? I love the inner peace I get, when I’m working on a project of any kind. But I get so lost in depression sometimes. I have seen numerous Doctors. And I’m really not into taking drugs. I take a few vitamins and I walk. I try to maintain a healthy Positive attitude at all times. I really love people, and here it comes Time, seems to never be there.

I have been working on this Crochet Mandala for a year. I’m only on part 6. Which is the tiny red circle in the middle. I love Helen’s patterns so much, and I would really like to complete at least one. Then I can say I tried.   Please go look at some of her creations, they are so beautiful. Give one a try, It is very relaxing.

My 2 cents, If you care to read it!

Sharyn Reed Not sure if you got my email Nathan, before everything was shut down. I want it known that I support you. This craziness has got to end. I’m all for equality. But when you have to scream it at the top of your lungs, hurt innocent people, or do disgusting things in the name of your cause, Like ruin people’s lives and livelihoods , careers, relationships. The question comes to mind are you the supporter or the Bully?
I do not now, nor have I ever looked at someone differently because of the color of their skin. To me our differences are what make us interesting.! It makes learning so much more. I believe I am a learner for life. I want to know about other cultures, Holidays,Foods,Lands, Beliefs.and Religions.
This is the only planet we as humans have been given to live on so far. Let’s stop the hate, bring back the love. get to know each other as People. In my youth these things were never discussed in public and the government had no business having it’s hand up our proverbial butt.
It’s time to put down the swords, and just love each other again. Who cares whose’s Great,Great ( insert relative here) did what to whom for why. The human history is full of examples of this very thing happening over and over. Go Look I’ll Wait!
It’s only ever ended with death and destruction every DAMN time.

I like humans who use their brains, I don’t care what they do behind closed doors AS LONG AS THEY ARE CONSENTING ADULTS! I don’t care where you buy your clothes or how rich you are!
I like humans so can we please start acting like them again! 🙏

Tour de Fleece

Tour de Flop

Hello Everyone “Tour de Fleece” started at the beginning of July. In case you don’t know, this is an event for spinners. But I believe there are crochet and knit teams as well. Check Ravelry for teams.

Any way, whether you spin, knit or crochet, this is a time when we all get together and spin our little hearts out

I will not be able to join this year because of one moment in time.

I looked out the door to see if the cab was here yet. I turned and walked down the stairs as usual not paying any attention. And BOOM!!! I was down on my hands and knees on the tiled concrete floor.

That was 1 second of not paying attention. I wasn’t able to move my legs. My son was getting ready to stroke out. I called (911). They came, the cab came . But at least things were happening, and he was able to cope. I had to take charge because he froze.

I couldn’t find a printed copy of my Med. Hx. So I had to do everything verbally. I was in the ER for hours. Finally they decided to admit me. My right knee swelled up like a balloon. My left knee not so bad. They gave me pain meds “Thank the Powers that be”.

They wanted to do an MRI. But, apparently there had been another emergency. I had to wait a day to get the MRI and another day to read it. It did not look good

A long, long time ago I was told I would never get out of the wheelchair. I said, “You watch me”! Fast forward to now. I walk with a cane.

I have always been a little strange, don’t tell me I can’t do something. That will be the first thing I do! I have been told things like that my whole life. first it was you can’t just teach yourself how to (insert craft). I always did.

Anyway back to the knee, it is very painful. I am taking meds for everything else, what’s one more. The MRI did not look good. So basically I’m resting the knee. I have a brace on that leg and I’m back in the chair, but I’m looking at knee surgery on the right. And knee surgery on the left in the future.

I thought for sure that was the end of Tour de Flop, but I can actually spin on my spindles and my Wheel. The action happens in the ankle not the leg, so I can still do it but slowly.

So I can still do what I love, just slower. I love making beautiful Yarns. I dye up the fiber after I have chosen the mix. Then I spin, so no two skeins are alike even within the same dye lot.

Be very careful of those 1 second mistakes they can set you back a bit. I have a lot of rehab ahead of me. But I will get through in record time and get back out of this chair!

Hope you are all well. Remember you can do anything you put your mind to! Be Positive it works. Keep crafting, it’s good for your soul.

Humans and The Arts

Since the dawn of time Humans have been learning the Arts. Early man covered themselves for warmth with animal hides (early fashion). They made symbols on cave walls (early painting and storytelling) then came fire, and all hell broke loose. As we rush through history to modern times, Humans have learned many crafts. It would be a daunting task indeed to master them all.

But in that time Arts and Politics have rarely met. You could argue the point by saying politics shaped the human race and therefore dictated the Arts as well.

When they let us have computers, we found like minded crafters further apart. Since we couldn’t talk to our maiden Aunt twice removed on our maternal great grand mother’s side, we couldn’t ask her to teach us! The online knitting, spinning, crocheting, weaving ect….. communities were born! People could talk to each other around the world. As the world became more complicated we looked for support in our crafts and our communities.

I myself have a lot of different hobbies, but they all involve at least one stick and some string. As I got older and more disabled my hobbies became my life, my therapy, my love. I poured my heart and soul into everything I did.

When I first found the knitting (crocheting, spinning) communities, I was very scared to get involved. But I told myself if anyone on this planet would understand a lunatic like me, it would be those communities. I have never been interested in anyone’s religious beliefs, politics, or gender. All I am interested in is Art. I know that I live in the past a lot. But that’s just me. I have never discussed my religion, sex or politics with people who are not involved in my day to day life. I was raised that these things are not discussed in public, that these were private matters. Not to be discussed in public.

Most of these things were further enforced by my profession. As a Nurse, I was taught to be understanding of other peoples beliefs and privacy. To be respectful at all times. There are rules and boundaries that should be upheld. And Lord, if you love your job, NEVER EVER discuss religion or politics at work. Or make socially inappropriate comments about anyone else’s appearance, size or sexual orientation.

It really hurts me to see people that were friends yesterday, are now enemies due to their beliefs. I have friends who have different beliefs than I do, but that has nothing to do with our friendship. We’re friends because we have our Art in common. That’s enough to talk about for me. I don’t think it’s my business to know everything about them, if they feel they need me to know more about them than that, they will tell me if not, I don’t pry into it. I don’t judge people, its not my job.

My job is to share my Art with anyone who would like to hear about it. My hope is that we as a species will someday learn to live together. So, I will continue to share my blogs and my yarns* with you. But I will not discuss politics, religion, race, creed, color or sexual orientation. Also I will not date anyone from work! So don’t ask!

No Researching This Week

Hello Everyone! It’s been a rough couple of weeks, not gonna lie. Finding my positivity at times like this, is sometimes very difficult. You see I live in a lot of pain everyday, so I guess you could say I’m used to it. Sometimes even I, the queen of positivity, gets depressed. So I have pretty much gotten nothing done lately.

I have been doing a lot of spinning. I also got my first 4 oz. of fiber for SE2SE. It’s a Black Welsh Mountain sheep. It’s on the endangered list and originally came from the UK. But, there are farms here in the states that also raise them. His name is Cai, not sure if I can share his picture, but his fleece is very black, and apparently he enjoyed rolling in the hay quite a bit. Once I get the fleece washed, I’ll share a little more about him.

I took the advice of Betsan Corkhill and started a crochet Mandala. I’m using Bernat Handicrafter Cotton in a size 5, with a 2.00mm Crochet hook. It takes a lot of concentration to make some of these. This is an advanced pattern and is going to get a lot bigger before it’s done. Usually people use a lot of scraps to make these things. I’m only using 2 colors, it will be a gift for a friend and those are her favorite colors.

I think I’m coming to the end of this bout of depression. I really needed to get some work done. What are some of the things that you do, to help get yourself out of what I call a blue funk? What Is Color Therapy, What Is It For, And Is It Right For Me?

Colors are all around us. They’re in the natural world, in the homes we live in, the cars we drive, the clothes we wear, and the entertainment we watch. Colors aren’t just meaningless parts of our environment, either. They can change the way we feel and react to different situations. Color therapy uses these powers of color to heal, energize, and soothe us.

What Is Color Therapy?

Color therapy is an alternative therapy that uses colors and their frequencies to heal physical and emotional problems.Color therapy is also known as chromopathy, chromotherapy, or color healing.

What Is Color Therapy Used For?

The goal of color therapy is to correct physiological and psychological imbalances. For instance, if you’re stressed, color therapy can help soothe you so that you can regain your psychological balance. If you’re depressed, color therapy can be used to invigorate you and give you increased energy.

When Did Color Therapy Start?

Color therapy has been around at least since the time of Ancient Egypt. Egyptians believed in the power of light and used different colors of light to promote healing. Color therapy has continued to be important in some cultures. Even in Western societies that tend to prefer modern, institutionalized medicine, natural healers have continued to use colors to help people improve their physical and emotional health.

Although Western medicine doesn’t accept color therapy as such, Western researchers are studying the scientific properties of colored light and the light frequencies within it. Color therapy hasn’t ‘earned’ a place in Western medicine yet, but there’s a strong possibility that it might when all the research results come in.

Colors And Chakras

Eastern medicine is the source of many of the so-called alternative therapies in the Western world. In Indian philosophy, the chakras are considered the centers of spiritual power and energy within our bodies. There are seven chakras, and a different color represents each:

  1. The Root Chakra, located at the base of the spine, is represented by red. This chakra has to do with our grounding and connection with the Earth.
  2. The Sacral Chakra, located 2 or 3 inches below the navel, is represented by orange. This chakra is said to be associated with reproduction, the kidneys and adrenals, and pleasure. It is the mind-body chakra.
  3. The Solar Plexus Chakra, located between the navel and sternum, is represented by yellow. This chakra is associated with the pancreas, liver, digestive system, and gallbladder, as well as positivity, empowerment, and well-being.
  4. Green represents the Heart Chakra. It’s associated with the heart, lungs, and immune system. It’s associated with energy, the nervous system, mental focus, compassion, and empowerment.
  5. The Throat Chakra is represented by blue and is associated with the thyroid and metabolism as well as peaceful expression.
  6. The Third Eye Chakra, located between the eyebrows is represented by indigo and associated the pituitary gland and pineal gland and influences our sleep cycles, self-esteem, clarity, wisdom, and intuition.
  7. The Crown Chakra, located at the top of the head, is represented by violet and associated with the pineal gland, light sensitivity, sleep cycles, dreams, clarity, and spirituality.

Methods Of Delivery For Color Therapy

The alternative healing practice of color therapy relies on the delivery of the light frequencies of color to the body. The light either goes into the body through the eyes or via color therapy equipment.

Through Eyes

One way to take advantage of light therapy is to view the color simply. You look at the color for a few minutes. That’s all there is to the delivery. What you need to be careful with are the colors you choose. Green is considered the safest color. Red and orange may cause you too much excitement and agitation.

Color therapy is individualized as well. What works to help you might make someone else feel worse. For example, if you have a lot of anxiety and need to calm down, blue might be a good color to use. If someone else were depressed, though, blue wouldn’t be a color they should use in color therapy.

Via Color Therapy Equipment

There are various kinds of color therapy equipment. Some of them can be made easily, while others can be ordered for a color therapist’s use. This equipment uses the projection of colored light. Sometimes, the color is projected on a screen, and you look at it. The light comes from specific light bulbs of no more than 500 watts. With color therapy equipment, the colored light can be shone on your skin as well using modern and sometimes high-tech equipment that allows the hue and intensity of the color to be dialed in precisely.

Psychological Effects Of Different Colors

Colors affect our mental processes and can change our mood. Each color has a different effect, so different colors are used for different mental conditions and mood problems. The following list describes how each of the main colors used in color therapy affects us and what they can do for you.

Green

Green is the most balancing of all the colors. Color therapists usually consider green the safest color and typically start color therapy with it. When you’re feeling sad, hopeless, or depressed, green can improve your mood. However, it’s important to have a pure green color, as a light green can cause you to tip into anxiety.

Green is said to enhance the emotions of love, joy, and inner peace. It can bring you hope, strength, and serenity. Green is said to increase your wisdom and facilitate change and independence.

Blue

Blue is a color that must be used with extra care, as it can zap your energy if you’re feeling low. Blue does help you express your feelings, though, and is related to your inner truth. Blue is a cold color that can be used to help you become more peaceful and relaxed. Primary blue is often used in therapy settings used for meditation and relaxation.

Blue can also be associated with wisdom, creativity, loyalty, and spirituality. Too much blue or blue that is too dark can lead to sadness, depression, and a feeling of emptiness. Light blue promotes serenity. It can also be used to help with insomnia.

Yellow

Yellow can be used in color therapy to bring energy and encourage action. This color can make you feel happier. It can bring out your intelligence and wisdom. Too much or too-bright yellows are associated with betrayal, cruelty, and deceit. It can remind us of our mortality. Yellow is the most intense color in the spectrum.

Orange

Orange signifies abundance, pleasure, well-being, and sexuality. Orange may be used to stimulate different organs in the body for physical healing. It revitalizes you and gives you increased mental energy. It can increase your feeling of connectedness between your mind and body. However, color therapists usually avoid this color for you if you’re prone to anxiety.

Red

Red is even more stimulating than orange. It influences emotional issues like financial independence and physical survival. It’s mostly used for physical healing because its emotional effects can be extreme. Color therapists avoid shining red on your head, as this can cause intense agitation. Infrared can also be used by a skilled color therapist if done so with caution. Neither red nor infrared is used for someone who has severe mental conditions.

Purple

Purple is most strongly associated with beauty, spirituality, and bliss. In color therapy, violet is often used on the forehead and neck to initiate feelings of calm and relaxation. However, it’s recommended for use anywhere on the body.

I was really interested in my color choices and the colors in my stash. I thought maybe the reason some projects end up on time out is because of the colors in it. Either way it’s definitely food for thought.

The Gentle Art of Healing 3

I am continuing where I left off in this part of the series. the current question is, What else can knitting(crochet) do?

It can also help with issues like sleep problems, particularly if you’ve got thoughts whirling around in your head preventing you from going to sleep. Or maybe somebody who wakes at 3 am and can’t get back to sleep. In that case, I would recommend having a small case by your bedside, and it’s one of those things you can do quietly in bed to relax you enough to go back to sleep. Stress from work because you can use it on your commute to work, or at lunch. I think one of the things we learned from the survey was that computer tech people found it relaxing after working in a 2D atmosphere to a 3D project helped them to relax as well. you can use it for problem solving, in fact there is quite a lot of research that if you have a problem and you go away and you leave it, do some relaxing craft. your brain relaxes and an answer will some to mind.

Makes you happier

    • helps you feel safer
      • helps you socialize
        • gives your mind a break

The interviewer asked whether knitting can help us in our wellbeing day to day? You can use it whether your fit and well or if you suffer from an altered mental condition. Because we suffer from an ongoing condition of stress, so if you don’t manage your stress on a day to day basis it can give us other problems.

Some use it to find friends , join a knitting group. it’s a safe environment and you meet people from a lot of different backgrounds, that you wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to meet.

Helps with sleep problems

      • helps finding friends & building community

The interviewer asked, “How can we motivate ourselves to get started knitting for wellbeing”? The motivation part is a big problem, actually it’s one of the biggest issues in the healthcare system. Is to actually help people to get motivated, get involved in their own healthcare. What we found was if we could help people to take small achievable steps and build on that. Once they felt successful at the smaller steps, they could then build on those feelings.
So going back again to this rewardable occupation, you’ve got a system in your brain called the reward system. The brain provides a natural boost of a feel good chemical, seratonin.

I have read 2 of Betsan Corkhill’s books, “Knitting For Health And Wellness: How to knit a flexible mind and more…” and “Crochet Therapy: The Soothing Art of Savoring each Stitch”. I found the information to be very interesting and the thoughts behind it very stimulating. The patterns are very easy for a beginner to master. She has a very calming way of writing, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend them.
